This year's World Police & Firefighters Tug-of-War
Championships were dominated by the Peel Regional Police from
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada in both men's and women's
divisions. Peel entered two teams in three of the five
competitive events.
In addition to the regular sanctioned competitions at the annual
highland games such as Embro, Cambridge and Fergus, Co-Ed events
have been a focus of smaller venues this summer within the Ontario
League.
The Bluewater Tug-of-War team is all set to participate in
the European Championships being held this year at the
"De Smelt" sports complex in Assen, (a
provincial capital city in the Northern part of the
Netherlands) on September 18th to 21st, 2003.
Tug of War has long been a popular sporting
activity in rural Canada. From time to time we will revisit
some of the events from bygone years which brought fame to teams and
pride and excitement to their fans.
This issue features the "Zorra's", a team that won a world
championship for Canada in 1893.
