PEEL POLICE WIN GOLD IN BARCELONA |

Barcelona, Spain - August 2, 2003 This year's World Police & Firefighters Tug-of-War Championships were dominated by the Peel Regional Police from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada in both men's and women's divisions. Peel entered two teams in three of the five competitive events. The men's "Blue Team" captured gold in the Catchweight division with the "Red Team" finishing fourth. In the Heavyweight division, Peel's sole entry finished first and in the Lightweight class, the Canadians won bronze. The women's teams from Peel were unbeatable in the Heavyweight and Lightweight classes finishing first and second in both divisions. The 10th World Police & Fire Games were hosted by the city of Barcelona, Spain from July 27 to August 3, 2003. The Games, joined some 10,000 participants from all over the world, demonstrating a social acknowledgment to the firefighters and police officers who risk their own lives to protect their communities. During the days of the Games many social and cultural events were held, as exhibitions, symposiums and contests, which under the title "Cultural Security Forum" made the Games a celebration in all respects. The World Police & Fire Games were created in 1985 by the California Police Athletic Federation, with the goal of promoting physical fitness and sport within the police and fire fraternity worldwide and giving Law Enforcement and Fire Service athletes a World Class sports program of their very own. The Games are held biennially and are open to active and retired, publicly employed, full-time firefighters and peace officers around the world. For several years, Canadian police teams from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Mississauga, Ontario and Toronto, Ontario have successfully competed in the tug-of-war events. This year's competition was held on August 2nd with the Peel Regional Police men's and women's teams being the sole Canadian entries. The following are the complete results of the five competitive divisions.
