BLUEWATER WINS PRELIMINARY ROUND IN ASSIM



Bluewater 640K Team

Assen, Netherlands - Sept. 19, 2003

      The Bluewater Tug-of-War team successfully participated in the European Championships held this year in at the "De Smelt" sports complex in Assen, (a provincial capital city in the Northern part of the Netherlands) on September 19th, 2003.  The first Canadian team to ever take part at this event, the Bluewater team once again showed that they now have what it takes to be true contenders on the international stage.

      The team arrived in Assen on Thursday, Sept. 18th, 2003.  That afternoon they watched the 680 kg "Open" class where 64 teams were competing on 8 different ropes, and the women's 560 kg. division with 4 ropes in play.  All told, there were 24 teams engaged in competition on the field at any one time.


12 Ropes/24 Teams in Simultaneous Motion

      On Friday afternoon Bluewater competed in the 640 kg. "open" weight division. 56 teams were entered in that class and the teams were divided into 8 groups. In Bluewater's group, teams from the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, England, and Sweden were registered. Bluewater was very strong in this preliminary round, finishing in first place and advancing to the elimination round.
      In the next round, Bluewater was up against Sandhurst a very strong English team who proved themselves too powerful for the Canadians defeating them on both ends and thus advancing to the quarter finals.

The following are the results of the remainder of the 640 kg. Open Class:

Sandhurst (England) Goldscheurer (Germany) 0-3

THIRD PLACE ROUND
Veenseboys 1 (Netherlands) - Sandhurst (England) 3-0

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
Goldscheurer (Germany) - Engelberg (Switzerland) 2-1
