PEEL POLICE TEAMS REMAIN ONTARIO
CHAMPIONS IN 2003

Arva, ON - Sept. 19, 2003

"Unstoppable" is only way to describe the performance of the men and women of the Peel Regional Police from Mississauga during the 2003 tug-of-war season in Ontario. With a combination of excellent training, skilled coaching and a winning and determined attitude by all team members throughout the year, the Peel organization is to be congratulated for achieving the distinction of "2003 Ontario Champions" in both the Men's and Women's Catchweight divisions.  Along with their outstanding performance at the Police and Firefighters Games in Barcelona, Spain in August when both the men and women won gold in the Catchweight division, their achievements at the six local venues here in Ontario, made this their best season ever.

The Peel Ladies catchweight team was undefeated throughout the season, scoring 60 wins with a total of 90 points and were awarded the M. J. Monteith Memorial Trophy for their efforts.  In second place with their best season ever, was the Nissouri Ladies team from Thorndale, Ontario who ended the year with an impressive 33 wins, 27 losses and a total of 47 points.  Close behind in third place was the South Easthope Ladies club from the Stratford area with 23 wins, 25 losses and 33 points.  All three of the other Ontario teams who participated in this division, Bluewater from Dashwood, Toronto Highlanders from Toronto and Zorra from Embro, are to be congratulated for their efforts too, as they showed stamina, determination and strong competition throughout the whole season right to the last event at the Stratford Fair.

The Peel Regional Police Blue Team dominated the Men's Catchweight division with a total of 55 wins, 13 losses and a final point total of  80 giving them the Ontario Tug-of-War Championship trophy in that class.  Bluewater ended the season with a record of 41 wins, 15 losses and a total of 59 points to finish in second place.  The race for third was closely contested towards the completion of the season but in the end, it was South Easthope who emerged the winner with 36 wins, 32 losses and 51 points.

In the Men's 720 K division, the Bluewater team from Dashwood, Ontario finished on top with a record of 36 wins, 4 losses and 53 points.  South Easthope were certainly in the running all season and finished a respectable second with 23 wins, 17 losses and 33 points followed by a very strong performance this year by the Zorra club who ended in third place with a total of 19, 21 and 26.

In the Ontario league, the Men's 640 K, and 680 K weight divisions and the Women's 520 K and 560 K divisions are not generally popular at the events and were only on the program at the first tournament in Streetsville, Ontario last June.  Hence, the smaller numbers of points in the year-end tallies in those divisions.

Although the Co-Ed division was run at several events, it is not an official class and thus the results are not compiled for year-end summaries.

The following is a summary of the final statistics and standings for the 2003 season.
