PROMISING TO BE A BUSY YEAR FOR |
ARVA, ON - Feb. 29, 2004 With a focus on the World Outdoor Tug-of-War Championships scheduled for Rochester, Minnesota in September and a renewed desire to unify tug-of-war across the country, Canadian teams are facing a very busy 2004 season. Practice has already begun in many camps, particularly those that have made plans to take part in the World Championships in Minnesota. The Bluewater men's and women's teams have been meeting regularly twice a week since February 2nd. The teams not only are planning to participate in the regular Ontario schedule but also plan to attend the Monticello and Milwaukee events in Wisconsin. In Rochester, they plan to enter the Men's 640K and 680K and the Women's 520K in the Club Competitions. Other Ontario teams presently committed to taking part in the Club Competitions at Rochester in September include South Easthope and the Peel Regional Police. Some, such as Nissouri and Zorra are undecided at the present time about their team's involvement but regardless of the ultimate decision, many are planning to attend the world tournament as spectators. Practices for Team Canada entries in the International Competitions at Rochester are being held at the Bluewater training camp. The Canadian Qualifiers were held last June in Centralia, Ontario and the successful teams in each division are shown below.
Jim Connolly, coach of the Bluewater squad and head coach for CATOWA, indicated that several members from other Ontario teams have been attending their training sessions on a regular basis. He told me recently that as the spring season approaches, he is expecting more participation at these sessions. "Success in both the Club competitions and the International competitions can only occur with a great deal of hard work and training," emphasizes Connolly. All coaches, pullers or any other interested parties are reminded of the coaching course being held at the Embro Community Centre in Embro, Ontario on Saturday, May 8th, 2004. For those participating at the World Outdoor Championships, this event is mandatory. Most of the traditional league venues across the country have already set dates. At the same time several new venues have expressed a desire to introduce the sport into their programs. Readers can keep up to date with the Canadian, U.S.A. and World schedules by checking the Coming Events link on the front page of the COMMUNICATOR. Although the Can-Am Police & Fire Games scheduled for July 14th in Grand Bend is only open to two OTOWA teams, Peel and Toronto, it is expected that involvement from other police and fire departments across the country could generate a renewed interest in the sport when these participants experience the excitement and rewards of tug-of-war competition. Recently Hardip Cheena, a tug-of-war representative from British Columbia contacted the COMMUNICATOR with information about league activity in that province. He provided a video tape of the 2003 tournaments and indicated that he would send the 2004 schedule of events when it was finalized. This will also be posted on the Coming Events link when received. The traditional venues for Quebec and the Maritimes are currently being finalized and will also be posted when received. We encourage all tug-of-war participants across Canada to contact us with information about tournaments planned in their communities.
