discuss Police-Fire Games

      Planning continues for the 2004 Can-Am Police Fire Games scheduled for July 14th in Grand Bend, Ontario.  According to Laurie Legg, coordinator for the event and a member of the London Police Force, several teams from police forces across the United States and Canada who have competed at the event in previous years have been contacted as well as other law enforcement and fire fighting organizations in south-western Ontario.  To date she has had confirmation from five groups who have indicated that they would be willing to field a team.

      Originally known as the Northwest Police-Fire Games, the event began in Spokane, WA in 1977.

      The tug-of-war event continues to be organized under the guidance of the Can-Am Police-Fire Games Federation, the Tug-of-War International Federation (TWIF) and its member associations, the United States Amateur Tug-of-War Association (USATOWA) and the Canadian Amateur Tug-of-War Association (CATOWA). 

The tug-of-war contest consists of four divisions:

TW01D Men's Lightweight 1080 lbs & under 6
TW02D Men's Heavyweight 1081 lbs - 1500 lbs 6
TW01E Women's Lightweight 580 lbs & under 4
TW02E Women's Heavyweight 581 lbs - 800 lbs 4

      The contest rules are modified somewhat from the TWIF rules. They can be summarized as follows:

  1. Double elimination.
  2. Teams switch ends after each pull.
  3. Sitting or lying down as a tactic will result in disqualification.
  4. Footwear must comply with the International Rules. 
    1. Sole tread depth specifications will be strictly enforced. 
    2. Approved shoes will be stamped to indicate their eligibility. 
    3. Shoe inspection and weigh-ins will take place the morning of the Event. 
    4. No metal top-taps or toe plates are permitted. 
    5. A metal heel plate of maximum thickness of 1/4" (6.5 mm) that is flush on the side and bottom of the heel of the boot is permitted. 
  5. 6 man teams with one non-pulling coach. 
  6. 4 women team with one non-pulling coach. 
  7. 10 person roster.  
  8. On grass surface.

      Officials from the Canadian Amateur Tug-of-War Association and United States Amateur Tug-of-War Association have been asked to participate at the Grand Bend event.
