DUNCAN ELECTED PRESIDENT
OF CATOWA

EMBRO, ON - April 4, 2004

At a special meeting held here this morning at the town hall, Peter Duncan, a veteran police officer with the Metro Toronto Police Force and a member of the Toronto Highlanders tug-of-war club was elected president of the Canadian Amateur Tug-of-War Association, a position left vacant following the resignation of Bill Scanlan earlier this year.

According to the CATOWA constitution, half of the executive are to be elected after four years on odd numbered years and the other half on even numbered years.  This year, the offices of First Vice-President, Secretary and International Representative were open for re-election.

Regarding the definition of members, the constitution states that "CATOWA shall consist of affiliated members which are recognised as the only organizations controlling tug-of-war in their respective provinces or territories.  Only one affiliate member shall be permitted in each province."

At the present time, Ontario is the only province that meets the definition of "member" under the constitution.  At the inaugural meeting of CATOWA, it was decided that until such time provincial amateur associations for tug-of-war are established in other provinces in Canada, the affiliate members of the amateur association from Ontario (OTOWA) shall be the affiliate members of CATOWA for purposes of voting at elections.

The following are the results of the 2004 election.
OFFICE NOMINEES ELECTED
President Peter Duncan, Ted Hoffman Peter Duncan
1st Vice-President Ted Hoffman, Kevin McLeod Ted Hoffman
Secretary Deborah Gropp Deborah Gropp
International Representative John Purdie, Matthias Metzger Matthias Metzger

A biographical profile of the new executive will be posted in a later edition of this magazine.
