CERTIFICATION COURSE HELD FOR
CANADIAN COACHES

EMBRO, ON - May 8, 2004

Candidates at CATOWA Coaches Seminar

Today, twelve members of the Ontario Tug-of-War Association attended a "Coaches Certification" workshop conducted by Jim Connolly, National Head Coach for the Canadian Amateur Tug-of-War Association.  The seminar, held at the community centre just west of Embro, was the first of its kind to be presented for existing tug-of-war coaches and aspiring coaches in Canada.

At its last executive meeting in October, the CATOWA Board voted to make it mandatory for all coaches planning to coach at an international event to take this course and be certified.

Connolly covered various aspects of developing a successful team such as the role of the team coach, the training program, basic pulling techniques and effective conditioning and stretching exercises.

Malcolm Monteith, representing Chief Judge Tom Kempel who is presently recovering from recent knee surgery, outlined the international Tug-of-War Rules that will be used at the World Outdoor Tug-of-War Championships being held this September in Rochester, Minnesota.

The TWIF training video illustrating the points covered in the presentations was shown and the participants concluded the session with a live demonstration about position and pulling techniques using a training rope out-of-doors.

A multiple choice test of the material presented at the seminar was conducted and certificates were presented to the successful candidates.

The following twelve candidates completed the test successfully and are now certified to coach Canadian tug-of-war teams at international events.
