CAN-AM POLICE-FIRE GAMES CANCELLED |
|
Despite attempts to recruit teams that had previously competed at the Can-Am Police-Fire Games as well as bringing on local law enforcement clubs, organizers were forced to cancel plans to go ahead with the 2004 event that had been scheduled for July 14th in Grand Bend, Ontario. According to constable Laurie Legg of the City of London Police Force, their representative on the organizing committee, the cost for entry into the competition was a significant factor prohibiting local teams from taking part. In addition to a list of police and fire fighters teams who had participated in the past, Ms. Legg contacted the U.S. Police Games and Florida Police Games to solicit the names of current American tug-of-war teams who had participated at those events in recent years. She was disappointed to discover that they no longer have any police teams active in tug-of-war and that they have subsequently removed the sport as an event on their programs. Despite not being able to recruit any teams, Constable Legg pointed out that her inquiries generated fond memories of past games where tug-of-war was one of the most popular events. She also expressed hope that her conversations with these contacts might inspire a renewed interest in the sport at future Police and Fire Games. Complete results for the other 47 events held at 2004 London Can-Am Police-Fire Games are available on-line. |
