A large
crowd was on hand for the second annual tug-of-war tournament
held today on the Streetsville Memorial Park Island in
Mississauga. The event was organized by the Peel Regional
Police and the Ontario Tug-of-War Association and featured 720K and
catchweight classes for the men's teams as well as a catchweight
class for the ladies.
Five ladies teams were
present to provide an excellent start to the year's nine scheduled events. The
Peel Regional Police Ladies team |
| continued their unbeaten
record from last season with a perfect 6 and 0, placing 1st in
the competition. A strong showing by the South Easthope,
Nissouri and the Toronto Highlanders Ladies made for a tight
competition for 2nd and 3rd positions. It was only after
a third end was necessary in the pull between Nissouri and
each of the other two teams, that the results were made final. |

Organizers were
pleased with the turn out for the event and the calibre of competition
that was displayed throughout the day. This was the second
consecutive year for the tournament to be organized by the Ontario
Tug-of-War Association and the Peel Police although tug-of-war was a part of
earlier Bread & Honey Fests where only the local police teams
competed. |
| The
Men's Catchweight Division is always a major attraction
to audiences everywhere and today was no exception.
Again, the local Peel Police team was a powerhouse and
dominated the event with a total of 8 wins and 1 loss, the
latter being to a much lighter but ever-tough squad from
Bluewater. Another tense battle developed between the
Bluewater team and the team from Ellice that resulted in the
longest pull of the day, 3 min. 32 sec. In that match,
Ellice prevailed, scoring 3 points, putting them in 2nd place and forcing |

3rd. South Easthope Men and Toronto Highlanders
completed the standings in 4th and 5th respectively. |

Four teams were entered in this year's 720K Division.
For South Easthope (this year's entry for Canada in upcoming
TWIF Championships in Rochester, MN) the results were
disappointing as they were only able to manage 2 wins, putting
them in 4th place in the tournament. A well-tuned squad
from Bluewater, this year's Canadian entry in the 640K class
at Rochester, were undefeated and won the division. A
strong showing by the Peel Police team put them in 2nd
place. Ellice finished 3rd, just 1 point ahead of South
Easthope. |
