"TUGGIN' IN THE RAIN"

Excerpts from: The KW Record
Susan Mohammad - Record Staff
Monday July 18, 2005

CAMBRIDGE, ON - July 16, 2005

Team Zorra grind their teeth in the pouring rain and lean back as one member hollers out "Get your feet in boy!"
All eight members ignore the worsening weather; instead they dig their feet into the mud and pull back chanting, "Yes, yes, yes, yes."
The Toronto Highlanders hold out and as they curse and stomp, the rain gets harder and the lightning starts.  Team Zorra slides a little, then tenses up as a unit, resisting the muscle power on the other end.
The barbaric grunting is mixed with the sounds of cheering spectators and finally muddy knees give a little and the rope  gives way, handing team Zorra the win.
Although the inclement weather frequently caused rain delays throughout the men's 720K and

women's cwt programs earlier in the day, it was only in the mid-afternoon when the lightning became severe and flooding began on the field that it was necessary for league officials to stop the event.  "Remaining on a flooded track under a grove of trees is not the place to be in such a severe thunder storm!" said league president, Malcolm Monteith.  Monteith, a former resident of the area remembered other occasions at Churchill Park where such storms produced direct lightning hits and dangerous situations in the park.

"KID'S PULL" A BIG HIT AT CAMBRIDGE

About 20 kids from the grandstands were thrilled when asked if they wanted to come on the field for a competition after the completion of the Men's 720K event in the morning.  "This is good for public relations and it helps to get the audience involved," said Ron Totten, one of the members of the OTOWA coordinating committee who was responsible for organizing tug-of-war at the Cambridge Games.  Totten, has been a long-time advocate of children's participation at such events.
Team members from the Ontario league were close by during the competition to help the children pull properly and to ensure their safety.
